With a view to revitalizing Lakshadweep’s health sector, the island’s administration has decided to set up a paramedical college at Kavaratti, the island’s capital. “As part of the Skill India Mission of the Government of India, the Lakshadweep Administration is going to set up a Paramedical College at Kavratti, the capital of Lakshadweep, soon,” the administration said in a statement here on Wednesday.

Under the guidance of Administrator Praful K. Patel, the Department of Health Services conducted five paramedical courses including Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technological Dip G, Diploma in X-Ray Technology, Diploma in Operation Operation Theater Technology in G, Certificate of Hal Phalmik Sahayak. And CT scan technician. All the courses will be conducted in association with Bharat Sevak Samaj (BSS), an organization working in the field for the last five decades, the statement said.

“The establishment of this paramedical college lodge is aimed at meeting the needs of a pool of skilled human resources as well as enhancing the existing health infrastructure, especially when the Lakshadweep administration is in the process of improving and fully expanding its health infrastructure,” the administration said. The initiative will also create employment opportunities for locals, as they will acquire the required hourly skills, it said.

“It is noteworthy that often such skilled manpower is not readily available from other places on the islands which is causing difficulties in delivering quality medical services to the islanders. He added.
